Oral Infections Utah Valley Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery UT 84057-3745Getting a piercing in your mouth might seem like a good idea after seeing how stylish they can look, and tongue and lip piercings are becoming more and more popular. However, they aren't without complications. An oral infection is really common after having a piercing put in, even when the work is done by a trained professional.

With all the bacteria that's present in the mouth, it's difficult to avoid an infection after this type of piercing. Not only is an infection in your mouth unpleasant and unattractive, it's also potentially dangerous and could land you in the hospital. That's why it's so important to watch out for signs of infection, and why some people are deciding that oral piercings aren't worth the risk.

The Dangers of Oral Infections

Oral infections might seem like minor problems, but they can cause very serious issues if they are left untreated for too long. An oral infection won't just stay in one place in your mouth, it will spread with time.

A short while after the infection develops, it will spread to your gums and your jaw. Your teeth can loosen up if the infection spreads to your jaw, and you can even suffer from life-threatening conditions like septicemia or a blood infection if the issue goes without treatment for too long.

After having your piercing put in, make sure to check the site often for swelling that doesn't go away, for a discharge with puss and for an unpleasant smell. Also watch out for any ongoing pain, and light grade fevers that don't seem to go away. These can all be signs of infection that you need to treat as soon as possible.

If you believe that you have an oral infection after a piercing is put in, get to a healthcare professional as soon as possible. Come in and talk with the experts at our office and we'll help you get the treatment that you need to stop the infection. An oral infection is a serious matter and something that you should look out for.
