It Is Important You Mention Ringing in Your Ears at Your Next Visit

It Is Important You Mention Ringing in Your Ears at Your Next VisitRinging in the ears is often a condition known as tinnitus. Many people think of this as a minor inconvenience, but it is possible that there is a more serious issue behind the ringing.

If you have ringing in your ears, you need to mention it to one of our dental professionals at the next visit. There is a reason that your teeth may have something to do with your tinnitus.

The Causes of Tinnitus

It is not always easy to tell why a person suffers from tinnitus. There are many reasons, including changes in the ear bone, age related conditions, ear wax buildup and exposure to loud noise.

There is also a possibility that the tinnitus is a result of dental work or issues with your teeth. Knowing if the teeth are at the root of the tinnitus can depend on when it first started and how often it occurs.

One of the common causes for tinnitus is the use of a dental drill. A dental drill l emits a high-pitched noise when used on teeth. The noise goes directly to the inner ear through bone conduction. For some people, that noise can cause hearing loss and tinnitus.

Why Tell Your Dentist

It is important to tell the dentist about the presence of ringing in the ears because of the connection between drilling and tinnitus. It is possible for the dentist to take steps to lower the risk associated with drilling. We can use the drill for a shorter duration to prevent any additional damage to the ear.

One other procedure that emits a high-pitched sound is ultrasonic plaque removal. If a person is already dealing with tinnitus or is undergoing a procedure that carries a risk of tinnitus, this type of precaution is a good idea.

Tinnitus is not something that anyone wants to deal with. That does not mean they should avoid going to the dentist because of the risk during some procedures. It only means that a person should let their dental professionals know if they have or have ever had ringing in their ears known as tinnitus.
