Dental Sedation Induces Feelings of Relaxation and Comfort

What are my sedation options?

Types of Sedation Dentistry

The nature of oral surgery requires varying levels of sedation. From oral conscious sedation to general anesthesia, our dentists have several treatment options at their disposal.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that is administered through a nosepiece. You will be asked to breathe in normally through your nose, and the effects are usually felt within three to five minutes. Typically, patients are still well aware of their surroundings, but will be in a much more relaxed, carefree state. Nitrous oxide levels can be adjusted throughout the duration of your dental treatment. Once the procedure is complete, you will breathe in pure oxygen to flush the gas out of your system.

Oral Sedation

This sedative is administered in pill or liquid form, and is usually given to the patient 30 to 60 minutes before dental treatment begins. These medications can be taken alone or combined with other types of sedation. Our dentists will determine the proper dosage according to your age, weight, and unique dental needs. Most often, your medication will be administered upon arrival to our office. If you have severe anxiety, our dentist may also prescribe oral sedatives for you to take the night before your appointment.

IV Sedation

Intravenous, or IV sedation, is frequently used for oral surgery procedures such as extractions, bone grafts, and dental implant placement. This deep sedation option delivers medication directly to the bloodstream. We will place the IV in your arm or hand. Next, the appropriate sedatives will be administered. Our team can adjust sedation levels according to your specific needs, and we can even reverse the effects of the medication if necessary. During the procedure, your oxygen levels, blood pressure, and heart rate will be closely monitored.

General Anesthesia

Patients who choose general anesthesia will receive care from our dentist, Dr. Burton, in a hospital setting. This form of sedation works by interrupting nerve signals throughout your body and brain. As a result, your brain will not process pain and you will not remember what happened during the procedure. Unlike conscious sedation, general anesthesia requires intubation. This will ensure that you receive plenty of oxygen during your dental care appointment. Once the procedure is complete, you will be moved into recovery so our team can monitor you while you wake up.

I'm having an oral surgery procedure. Should I opt for sedation?

Typical Uses of Sedation Dentistry

Many of our patients ask us when they should opt for sedation dentistry. The answer to this question will be different for everyone. However, dental sedatives are most commonly used during complex or lengthy dental care appointments.

Dental Extractions

Bone Grafts

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Dental Implant Placement

Periodontal Surgery

I've heard this type of treatment is expensive. How can I afford sedation?

Paying for Sedation Dentistry

The cost of your dentistry visit will depend on several factors, including the type of procedure, length of surgery, and your unique dental needs. During an initial consultation, our dentists can tell you what to expect in terms of treatment fees.

At our practice in Saratoga Springs and Orem, UT, our team believes that everyone should have access to quality dental care. That's why we offer a range of financial options for your convenience. We accept most major dental insurance plans, and our team is happy to file claims on your behalf. In addition, we also offer alternative payment options. For example, those without dental insurance can take advantage of our special offer, which includes consultation, x-rays, removal of up to four teeth, and sedation for $1,000.
