What are my sedation options?
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide
Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that is administered through a nosepiece. You will be asked to breathe in normally through your nose, and the effects are usually felt within three to five minutes. Typically, patients are still well aware of their surroundings, but will be in a much more relaxed, carefree state. Nitrous oxide levels can be adjusted throughout the duration of your dental treatment. Once the procedure is complete, you will breathe in pure oxygen to flush the gas out of your system.
Oral Sedation
This sedative is administered in pill or liquid form, and is usually given to the patient 30 to 60 minutes before dental treatment begins. These medications can be taken alone or combined with other types of sedation. Our dentists will determine the proper dosage according to your age, weight, and unique dental needs. Most often, your medication will be administered upon arrival to our office. If you have severe anxiety, our dentist may also prescribe oral sedatives for you to take the night before your appointment.
IV Sedation
Intravenous, or IV sedation, is frequently used for oral surgery procedures such as extractions, bone grafts, and dental implant placement. This deep sedation option delivers medication directly to the bloodstream. We will place the IV in your arm or hand. Next, the appropriate sedatives will be administered. Our team can adjust sedation levels according to your specific needs, and we can even reverse the effects of the medication if necessary. During the procedure, your oxygen levels, blood pressure, and heart rate will be closely monitored.
General Anesthesia
Patients who choose general anesthesia will receive care from our dentist, Dr. Burton, in a hospital setting. This form of sedation works by interrupting nerve signals throughout your body and brain. As a result, your brain will not process pain and you will not remember what happened during the procedure. Unlike conscious sedation, general anesthesia requires intubation. This will ensure that you receive plenty of oxygen during your dental care appointment. Once the procedure is complete, you will be moved into recovery so our team can monitor you while you wake up.
