Tooth Extraction
See How Tooth Extraction Can Improve Your Oral Health
Why Oral Surgeons Should Do Extractions
Oral surgeons are dentists who have additional, specialized education and training in treating oral health problems involving the face and jaws. While some dentists may be able to do simple, non-surgical extractions, they usually send their patients to an oral surgeon for complex extractions or other dental surgeries.

Severe Damage
Dentists can not save your tooth due to major damage from decay or injury. In these cases, tooth extraction must be performed to maintain your oral health.
Impaction
Impaction is a condition in which a tooth isn't breaking through your gums properly or is stuck in your jawbone. Dentists frequently refer their patients to us for impacted tooth extraction.
Crowding
If your mouth does not have room for erupting wisdom teeth, or your existing teeth are too crowded together for orthodontia to work properly, dentists may recommend tooth extraction.
Tooth Infection/Pain
When a severe toothache occurs, it may mean your tooth has become severely infected. A dentist may recommend extraction if root canal therapy or antibiotics don't help. This can prevent the infection from spreading.
Gum Disease
If your gums and the tissues surrounding your teeth are infected, the teeth may become loose. In serious cases, an extraction may be needed.
Impacted Teeth Which Teeth Are Most Commonly Affected?
- Wisdom Teeth
- Wisdom teeth usually erupt in your late teens or early twenties. If not extracted, they can cause a multitude of dental problems, including growing in crooked, crowding existing teeth out of alignment, or becoming impacted under your gums or in your jawbone. That can cause pain, gum disease, and infections.
- Canine Teeth
- Your canine teeth, also known as cuspids or eyeteeth, help with chewing, keeping surrounding teeth in alignment, and shaping your smile. If they become impacted, it can affect oral function and tooth alignment. Painful cysts can also form if our oral surgeons do not extract impacted canines.

More Glowing Reviews from Our Patients
Went in this morning to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed and was very anxious about it as I have never had any type of surgery before...I am very impressed with the work they did, as it has only been a few hours and my swelling has drastically gone down and the pain is minimal. Thank you Dr. Rasmussen and staff for doing this procedure for me, I would highly recommend choosing this place when you need your wisdom teeth removed.
View on GoogleI am a dentist in Orem and have referred patients and family members to both Dr. Burton and Dr. Rasmussen. Having seen their work many times and having received numerous good reports from my patients, I feel very comfortable sending patients to Utah Valley Oral Surgery...Their bedside manner is great, their clinical skills are impressive, they have a caring staff, and--perhaps most important--I trust them. I highly recommend this office for all oral surgery, implant, and TMJ disorder needs.

Recovery and Aftercare
- You may experience some minor bleeding, swelling, and pain over the next few days. Applying gauze and ice packs can help with bleeding and swelling, while pain meds can relieve discomfort. Please do not smoke, as that inhibits healing.
- Stick with soft or liquid foods for a day or so that you do not dislodge the blood clot over the extraction site. Biting into something hard may cause more swelling, as well. Don't brush or floss the extraction area right away, either, as that can dislodge the blood clot. Rinse gently with salt water instead.
- Dislodging the blood clot can cause a painful condition called dry socket. When dry socket occurs, the bone in the socket can become exposed, leaving it susceptible to bacteria. If you suspect dry socket has developed, call our Orem or Saratoga Springs practice immediately. A special surgical gauze may need to be put over the dry socket to allow a new blood clot to form.
